The first thing I would like to say is that Renee Wahl's letter with her exact salary should be sent to all the new media. However, the figure should also show what teachers earn when they work full time, and should also mention the take home pay. This is the figure people relate to. For example, the take home pay of a friends live in home help is 4700 shekels. Remember, she has no other expenses. And house maids in the central area earn 40 - 60 shekels an hour. Just food for thought.
The second thing I would like to relate to is something which I have not seen mentioned. One of the reasons that the English teachers have such a hard time is that they have to cover virgin territory as far as grammar, punctuation, writing skills and general knowlege are concerned. One could turn round - many do - and say that the Hbrew teachers,history teachers and so on, are not doing thier job. However, this is not the case. The fact is that the antiquated curriculum is what tells these teachers what they have to teach. They must "cover the material', or else.
This just underlines the fact that reform is necessary in every area, not only in numbers of children in the class, in provision for disciplinary measures, in the technicalities of numbers of available computers, and room to work. Certainly a full time job should entail a full day's work. But this full day's work MUST receive a take home salary that a teacher can live on, without having to supplement it with outside jobs.
Has anybody ever taken a picture of teachers in the staff room on the 1st September, all glowing and smiling, their eyes full of enthusiasm? And then taken another one towards the end of June of grey-looking, despondent creatures, shoulders hunched, dark circles around their eyes? 

I rest my case.
