Subject: Intelligence or English
I think the discussion of intelligence versus English might be a little off
the point. Correct me if I am wrong, but the recent Bagrut exams seem to be
testing neither intelligence nor English - unless the vast majority of
native speakers, and the excellent non-native speakers are all so dumb that
they are unable to answer the questions. And yet this is what is constantly
happening.
Natonwide exams in other countries are pre-tested, to make sure that bad
questiions or unclear questions are eliminated. I'm sure we've all written
tests that have subsequently proved to have poor questions, or questions
with more than one answer, but that is because we have to make up many
tests, and can't always get another overworked teacher to check it. If we
use the test again, we eliminate bad questions.
Here, the 'pre' testing is done post-test, sometimes resulting in the
ridiculous situation of accepting all the answers on multiple choice
questions.
These are not intelligence tests; they are just bad tests which, in addtion,
don't test the language.
