Subject: Grouping
My school has non-heterogeneous groups. The students are divided into levels
and have been for many years.
It's very frustrating for extremely weak students to study with advanced
students in heterogeneous groups. They get bored and disturb and nobody can
study. Most of the lesson is wasted on discipline problems. On the other
hand, strong students who have to listen to the same explanations repeatedly
also become bored. The teacher has to juggle among all the levels and
prepare various materials for the same group. In addition, there are very
few course books geared to heterogeneous classes, which means extra work and
preparation time. Dr. Penny Ur says that the number of levels in a group is
the same as the number of its students. This is true, of course, but when
the differences are too extreme, the group simply cannot function. Add the
fact that groups can have up to 40 students and you get pandemonium.
In my opinion, grouping should be compulsory for junior and high schools, so
that principals won't have a say in it.
