I think this sounds VERY unfair - the students shouldn't have to pay for the
teachers' past mistakes or just lapses and over-leniency). My kids know
that they have to get my personal approval for a book before they begin
reading it. And I do NOT go across the board with any of them - even if I
have a 5 pointer who is relatively weak and I know has difficulty reading,
I'll be more lenient in my approval of his /her selections.
These kids are bombarded with work in all subjects - we are NOT their only -
nor, necessarily, their most important subject! To force them to read more
books just because "we" screwed up is NOT fair and will only serve to back
them into a corner, encourage them to find a way to "cheat" or frustrate
them into hating English AND their teacher. Sounds WAY too extreme to me. I
am a REAL stickler for extensive reading - I believe it is one of the most
important things we get them to do, and my rules for what I demand for my
projects (mini tasks / journal throughout the reading process, in addition
to a creative task done IN class, in my presence, relevant to the book
read) but what you coordinator is suggesting sounds just plain unfair to me.
