The skills that Barry mentions are not ones that an English
teacher should be expected to teach. The problem is that
throughout the system, kids are not taught to read and
analyse texts properly in their own mother tongue. What,
therefore, can we as foreign language teachers do?
My daughter, who is an English speaker whose level of
fluency is almost equal to native-born speakers only got 87
on Module E (Moed A). Admittedly she was only in 10th grade,
but when we went over the exam, she had understood it
perfectly. It seems that whoever is making up the tests now
was previously employed as a composer of cryptic crosswords
in a newspaper.
The English Bagrut should test the level of comprehension of
the examinee not his IQ.
