Subject: Ethiopian Students
If anyone can give me - a novice in this branch of TEFL - ideas about the
effect of cultural background on Ethiopian immigrant students in Israel, I'd
be very grateful. For example, why do new olim from Ethiopia seem to have
difficulties with graphic representation (e.g. charts and tables) and
answering multiple choice questions? What do we English teachers need to
know about the system of education that these students have just left
behind? Are there any easily accessible articles on the subject (my googling
has so far proved useless)?
Also, do those of you with experience in this field think that an elementary
knowledge of Amharic will help us to teach English more effectively to such
students?
Any help will be much appreciated.
