Subject: Ethiiopians, English and best way to help them
The question raised on this list is what is the best way to assist learners
from foreign countries learn English. This applies to Ethiopians in
particular because unlike Russian or French immigrants they do not have
English programs in their schools in Ethiopia. We should not learn Amarhic
nor use Hebrew. We should speak only English with them. The best way to
become fluent in a language is immersion. I have considerable experience
with Ethiopian students during my days teaching in Montreal and privately
with many of them. Many of my students have graduated high school or are
still in high school. They have a high fluency in three languages: English,
French and Hebrew. If we continue to speak Hebrew in a second language
English classroom our students will never master the language. Is it no
wonder so many write 3 point bagruts in English?
