Subject: English speakers
Dear List, and for the attention of Judy Steiner,
I feel very strongly that the Ministry take responsibility for the English
speakers, and exceptional Hebrew speaking English learners. I constantly
come across pupils, whose parents, like Erez Cohen, are asked to buy the
books the class is studying with, and to study with the class. These
children quickly become bored, and frequently disruptive.
There are many good books in the country for English speakers, and many of
them lend themselves to the pupils working alone. However, the parents
can't be expected to know what these books are, and the teachers -
particularly in elementary school, are not trained to teach native speakers,
and feel incredibly pressured by the situation they find themselves in.
Usually, my offer to provide these students with work they can do in
class, and to correct what they do, is greeted with relief and co-operation
from the teacher. Occasionally, however, the teacher digs in his/her heels,
and refuses to budge from the initial demands. In any case, this is a very
slapdash method of dealing with a growing problem. It shouldn't be
difficult for the Minnistry to put out a list of suggested books, with
varying degree of difficulty for each grade, and with suggestions to the
English teacher. Some enterprising person might even create tests for the
various books.
Hoping you all have a very fruitful and peaceful New Year.
Jennifer
