[etni] Re: Fw: Encouraging students to converse in English

Hi Hadas...

While i dont' have "specific" ideas that I can say I have used, i just
thought of some things, that may help.

Perhaps, if you printed out conversations for him for you to practice
together, at first, he will have the backup of the printed word so he will
not be afraid to make mistakes, and then you can practice the exact same
conversation by heart...so he gets confidence. Eventually, change the
conversation slightly..keeping the basic structure but changing the topic.
YOu can find conversations for english learners on the internet.

I don't know if it will be appropriate for 8th grade, but I use PUPPETS!
This REALLY gets the kids talking. They hide behind the puppet and all of a
sudden lose their shyness. AT the beginning of the course, I show them how
to make a simple folded hinge puppet....works great! The site is
puppetools.com and, unfortunately, you can't see the folding video without
subscribing...(when i found them, it was still free) but it is VERY simple
to do, and if you want, email me and i will tell you how to make the simple
hinge puppet.

Read a story, and then act it out (you can just use stick puppets....paste a
picture of the character onto a popsicle stick) the dialogue.

There are "dialogue cards" that you can use..it gives a scenario, and then
you have to discuss it...google "dialogue cards". By printing out cards, and
then he "picks one"..it is more game-like than if you just assign him the
topic. There are also board "games" that are the same idea...just a path
with dialogue topics, so it is up to the "dice" to decide on the topic.

Hope that helps...will be interested to hear about other ideas!
