Dear Ethnians,

I was shocked and saddened by the headlines in the Maáriv and the Jerusalem
Post newspapers this morning.  Has the world gone crazy or have we entered a
parallel Bizarro World (Superman comics and for the youngsters among us - if
there are any - Seinfeld)?

The police are actually blaming the tragic death of a 17 year old boy on the
teacher's strike. The gist is that teenagers are roaming the streets in the
wee hours of the morning because they are bored. It was also implied on the
radio that the rape of a 12 year old girl who snuck out of her house at 2
a.m., was due to the fact that she had had nothing to do.

Hellooo!  Where are the parents of these teenagers?  Where is their
authority?  Why don't they assert this authority?  For many years, I have
felt that for the most part, Israeli parents have given up on raising their
children and giving them a value system other than a monetary one.  This is
obvious to those of us who teach in high school and meet with parents.
Truancy, lack of preparedness for class, etc., are deemed to be our problem
and ours alone.

I am sorry that our union and the PR firm that they have hired have not
pointed out that what a teenager does with his/her time out of school is not
the teachers' responsibility, but that of their parents and community.

Violence is a problem in and out of school.  The death or abuse of a child
at the hands of a peer is unforgivable.  As teachers we have been witnessing
this distressing change in our society and have called for programs to help
our citizens.  For the most part, our pleas and warnings have fallen on deaf
ears.  Now, we are being blamed for the violence!
