Subject: Advice about teaching translation
Hi Etniers
I'm looking for advice, tips guidance etc on using translation
in Native speaker classes in junior high. I experimented with it
for the first time in my 8th grade class. Fortunately the experiment
was a success. Success =
a) kids saying 'can we do that again? That was really good'!
b) lots of animated discussion amongst them about the best choice of
word, what's a 'mother tongue', English grammar v. Hebrew grammar.
We had a brief discussion at the start of class about principles and
pitfalls of translation etc. Then I handed out Hebrew novels for
teenagers and they translated.
I'd like to develop this further. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I'd also like to improve my own very basic knowledge of translation
principles.
Any suggestions for reading material?
Thanks a bunch.
Gloria
