Subject: A Taste of the ETAI Summer Conference in Jerusalem
Dear Colleague,
This year we have speakers galore, coming from as far away as Australia and
New Zealand, plus the United States, to the ETAI National Summer Conference
2007, to be held on July 10-11th at the David Yellin College of Education in
Jerusalem. Here is a "sneak preview of what is planned:
James Kennard, a longtime educator who is currently principal of one of the
largest Jewish day schools in Australia, and a new face at ETAI, will be
delivering the opening plenary. His topic, "Know Your School – Improve Your
School," will deal with the very relevant issue of how teachers can make a
difference in school management. Born in London, Kennard was educated at
Oxford University, with an MA degree in pure mathematics, and has been a
school principal, in both the primary and secondary sectors, for 11 years.
He has appeared frequently on BBC radio programs dealing with education, and
has written in the Jewish press in both the UK and Australia.
Karen Love, another new face at ETAI, comes to us from New Zealand. She
has taught English and Communications since 1971, with experience in a
variety of locales, including Australia, the United States, and New Zealand.
Dr. Love has published and presented widely across a broad spectrum of
topics: Shakespeare, Renaissance poetry, organizational communications,
gender communications, film and popular culture, and education for the
gifted-at-risk student. Her book, Lies Before Our Eyes, deals with the
denial of gender revealed in texts from the Bible to Shakespeare, from
American literature to popular culture.
Gail Weinstein, Professor of English at San Francisco State University, has
more than two decades of experience in training professional English
language teachers, as well as designing and directing community-based
language/ literacy programs. She is widely published in TESOL and adult
education. Dr. Weinstein's publications include textbooks for ESL learners,
such as, Stories to Tell our Children, and Collaborations. At the
conference, she will be presenting a workshop entitled, "English Learner and
Teacher Stories for Learner-Centered Teaching", as well as one of the
keynote talks.
Richard L. Curwin has agreed to return this summer as a keynote speaker.
His expertise lies in providing practical, proven ideas to effectively
manage children's behavior in a way that respects the dignity of each
individual. Dr. Curwin is the co-author of Discipline with Dignity and As
Tough as Necessary: Countering Violence, Aggression, and Hostility in Our
Schools. His newest book, Making Good Choices, offers teachers ready-to-use
strategies designed to encourage students to accept responsibility for their
own behavior, and to recognize that mistakes can become opportunities for
learning.
Another highlight of this year's conference will be a talk on the topic,
"The Media and Israel," with David Horovitz, editor of the Jerusalem Post.
Yet another special event will be a live performance by JEST, the Jerusalem
English Speaking Theater, who will perform scenes from Korczak's Children,
based on two days in 1942 at the ghetto orphanage directed by the legendary
Janusz Korczak.
Last but not least, for those who missed the raffle last year, this year we
will have not one, but four, free book raffles during both days of the
conference. These drawings will be sponsored by the publishers and
booksellers. In addition, we are reinstating our traditional ETAI raffle,
with a variety of prizes (not books), so come and be pleasantly surprised!
All in all, a vivid array of presentations awaits you at the ETAI National
Summer Conference in Jerusalem, so make your arrangements in advance, and
plan to be there! For those coming from out of town, hotel rooms may be
reserved. Call the ETAI office (02-500-1844) for details.
