Subject: 50 pupils in thethe 'a' stream
In reply to the inspector who said that one could teach 50 pupils in the 'a'
stream, that pupil I mentioned who feels that his class is like a jungle is
in 8th grade 'a' stream. His only comment is that it is marginally better
than the 'b' stream.
I believe the Japanese often have 50 pupils in a class; then again, if a
pupil is late the electronic gate might be closed on him, killing him. Or
is this just an urban legend? In any case, such a real threat might make a
difference! (Just joking).
I often remember a wonderful system that worked in England. In our school,
Thursdays was half day; we studied till 1p.m. However, if a pupil had three
black marks agaist him, he had to return and do work till 6. Perhaps the
teachers were paid for coming in for those extra hours, or perhaps it was
considered part of their duty. All I can say is that this constituted a
real threat. If it happened to you once, you did everythiing in your power
not to let it happen again. The black marks, by the way, were for bad
behaviour, homework not done and lateness. And you couldn't not come; if
you didn't turn up, y ou faced expulsion, not suspension.
