I have just finished teaching my grade 12 pupils two poems and a song. Material
is suitable for any reasonably strong high school class.
They complement each other thematically and provide a light and more serious
mix.
My Papa's Waltz (poem by Theodore Roethke)- BTW, There is a great description
from the book Teacher Man in which Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) describes a
lesson he has teaching this poem. I read it to the class after we had finished
it. Some enjoyed it and others got bored.
Those Winter Sundays (poem by robert Hayden) - Thanks Maxine Tsvaigrach for
introducing me to this poem at ETNI last summer. Maxine gave out a handout of
some wonderful poems! They are all connected thematically.
A Boy Named Sue (song by Johnny Cash ) - Thanks to David Curiel for including
this song in some teaching materials he has shared with us. The class loved it!
As you will see if you look at my lesson plan, there is quite a lot one can
teach from this song from grammar to vocabulary to literature.
You can find the material plus lessons plan outlines on
www.schooly.co.il/boyer_english
Go to literature, then poetry, then father and son.
