 After years of trying to understand why so many students spell really
and 
 finally with only one 'l' I think I've finally solved the mystery.
 While working with one of my weaker pupils on adjectives and adverbs,
she 
 wrote the word 'realy'.  I asked her why she chose to add 'y' instead
of 
 'ly'.  And she said......
 "I thought that it was like adding only the 'd' when a verb ends in
'e'."
 (Get it?  Real ends with 'l' so all we need to do is add the 'y'.)
 Aha!  There's the logic to the mistake.
 Now maybe I (we) will have some insight the next time we are
re-teaching 
 'really'.
