Kate wrote last week:
"Now, the power is back after "something" was hit by a Katyushah. I'm
sitting on the sofa, listening to the missiles fall, and the conference
seems very far away. Was it only yesterday?
Yes, it has been a celebration of English which suddenly feels so
irrelevant. But still, we must go on and pray for the safe return of
Gilad, Eldad and Ehud, wish for a quick recovery of the wounded and e
mourn the death of our soldiers.
Hope we'll get some sleep tonight.

Then I read Barry's entry about his shelter and preparations to use it.
I live in the apartment building closest to the Baba Sali's shrine here
in Netivot. I teach in Ulpanat Tzvia Sedot Negev where many of our
pupils commute from nearby Sderot. What can I say? I heard on the news
Friday morning thtat a young child from Metulla who was interviewed said
"It's crazy here with Katyushot. In the center of Israel it is always
crazy with suicide bombers. In the south it is crazy due to Kassam
rockets. Every area has its' own craziness, so I am not scared."
That, in a nutshell is our situation! My dear pupil Ella Abukasis was
murdered in Jan. 2005 and the girl standing near her is my present
pupil, going into 12th grade. She (Michal) had shrapnel removed from
her head. 3 weeks ago her dad was outside when a Kassam fell in front
of his eyes. From the trauma (it brought back what he went thru in 2005
with Michal) his right arm became paralyzed. (thankfully, little by
little, it "healed"). Another pupil of mine has no Mom at home since
they had a rocket hit their home 2 weeks ago; she is in a psychiatric
ward in Beer Sheva. Erev Shabbat last week, we had a kassam rocket fall
within sight of our home, right beyond the cemetery where the Baba Sali
is buried.
**sigh** Gotta stay strong, keep our faith and morale up and remember,
HE , upstairs, is thankfully on our side! Let us pray that our 3 boys
are returned alive and NOT like Benny Avraham, Omar Suade, and Adi
Avitan. Also hopefully the army's decisive and painful response to
Hizaballa will make them realize that we mean business this time and
there will be no more talk as in the past that "Tzahal will respond if
and when it sees fit." In the States it's called "kicking some A**." I
am proud of my neighbor Amir Peretz who seems more concerned with our
welfare than that of the world's view of us.
May we all remain safe, strong, and united and May G-d keep our boys out
of harms way. May there be no more casualties on any of our fronts. As
the boy from Metulla said on the news.... this is a crazy country!
