Subject: Tziun Shanti..fair? Ha
From: "Judy Givati" <jesg50@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
The truth of the matter is that a while back when someone complained
about the unfairness of the "yearly grade" and said it was her school's
turn and we'd be next , I read the letter with interest but as my
experience at that point was with the old new Bagrut, I didn't
understand
what she was saying...Now that I was personally raked over the coals
by 2 students who didn't even deserve the grade that I did give them,
I'm livid.. and exhausted since I couldn't sleep I was so angry....
as usual it's the English teacher who's the guilty party..why?
because the English teacher is in the field trying to implement the
Ministry's program that even the Ministry won't support!!!!!!!
The Ministry actually did come up with a decent plan...whether by
design or accident..???
The idea of evaluting students based on a variety of parameters (not
just reading comp) in different situations(home /class/alone/ group)
throughout the semester or year
seems fair...
Unfortunately, at the end of it all...those of us who follow
this setup and "enforce" this policy in school are likely to have it
thrown in our faces because, at the end of the time period, the
school administration with the backing of the same MInistry
..expects the yearly grade to equal the matchonet/ Bagrut results.....
This expectation is frequently unrealistic..
1) the matchonet /Bagrut don't check all the same parameters as
the Tziun Shanti
2) the expected similar results don't take into account students
who do nothing all semester but can ace Module E or pupils who
work themselves into exhaustion for the projects, etc. but freak
during tests
The Ministry then turns around and demotes (or whatever they do)
schools for the differences... thus defeating the plan that they
themselves put into action and made us implement....... not
only do the English teachers get all the extra work but we also
become targets of anger for kids, parents, administrators,
etc.,etc....
So ,Sara, t here are teachers more savvy than us who say the
h-ll with it and let their kids do whatever .. then there are people
like us, who after all these years, still haven't learned and naively
continue to set clear goals for their students and ,like Don Q.,
argue with their principals that kids need to learn responsibility
and accountability, not just numbers ..and will probably, as a
just reward ,end up on the 20,000 list ....
