I would like to thank ETNI People for
advising me or at least commiserating with my virus
plight.
 
As often happens, no sooner did i write for help that
the solution appeared.
 
For those of you with similar problems, i did the following:
 
I uninstalled the damaged Norton.
I did alt-control-delete to see what was running, and wiped off 
anything suspicious.
 
Suddenly, things began to work.
 
I was able to download the improved version of Ad aware ( which refused
to
download).
 
Then i cleared away hundreds of spy and similar files.
 
Suddenly my computer worked faster and my breath smelled sweeter.
 
I downloaded AVG antivirus and the improved Yahoo toolbar.
 
I ran the new virus checker and the Yahoo anti spy; and all the
remaining problems disappeared,
 
I even regained control of my homepage.
