Subject: Re: [etni] fewer hours in English???
Enough has been said about the need for more hours in order to teach
English (as opposed to drilling for an NBA exam), so I don't think
there's a need to reiterate.
There's one more aspect of the fewer (or less - depending on the dialect
you speak) hours of English instruction which no-one has yet mentioned.
It would be fairly natural for the Ministry, a schoold district (dept of
ed. at a municipality) or a school principal to initiate the process of
condensing the hours as this would permit saving on teachers' salaries.
The school would then have quite a sizable chunk of hours that could be
used at the principal's discretion (which, as you know, is often guided
by considerations of totally extrapedagigical nature).
But to see a *teacher* voluntarily offering to condense teaching hours
and give up a whole year of salary sounds strange, to say the least. I
have re-read the original message that started this thread, and could
find no indication that it was a proposed self-sacrifice (like, "I'm
willing to give up MY hours in the 12th grade in order to achieve the
fuzzy goal of condesing the hours" etc..). I have to assume that it
boils down to "let's condense the hours - but let it be some other
teacher who is given the sack or loses part of her workload and pay, not
me."
Just in case there are people on the list who seriously consider
teaching as first of all a calling, a mission, and only then a gainful
employment that enables teachers to put bread on their own children's
plates - how many of you are willing to give up YOUR hours in order to
condense the hours of English? The money saved by condensing these hours
will still be paid - to someone else and for some other work. Why do you
consider yourself less worthy of this pay?!
Everyone has the right to shoot him/herself in the foot. Just stay
aside, to decrease your own chances of biting the bullet.
Best -
