When I do projects with weak groups, I have them choose the
topic (i.e. which country). Then I spend time on the Net finding
them sites whose English is easier enough for them to somehow,
with my help, deal with.(Yeah, I know-- I'm an idiot to do this
at home without getting paid for it, but otherwise, the project
time needed at school is double; when the kids get 2-3 sites they
have NO excuse for not starting to work.) I must say that one
year in a REALLY weak 4 pt. class, I allowed the pupils to use a
little of the original text from the site provided: A- I SAW PROOF
THAT THEY TRANSLATED THE INFO AND KNEW WHAT THEY WERE QUOTING
and B- They had to write their own introductions including why
they chose the topic, and what their research question is.
Also, they had to write their own summary.
Let's be honest: in University when we submitted term papers and
/ or did a thesis we all quoted word for word from other sources
and then noted the places with a number , and source in the Appendix.
Writing projects should, in my opinion, help the pupils learn
how to write other serious research papers and I feel it is
legitimate for weak pupils to copy small portions from "ready texts,"
as long as they don't download entire projects. I'm sure some
teachers won't agree with this-- to each his own :)
