Subject: FW: Proposed Summer Institute in Applied Linguistics at
Newcastle
 From: "Vivian Cook" <Vivian.Cook@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Dear ETNI ,

We are thinking of setting up an annual Summer Institute in
Applied Linguistics at Newcastle University starting in 2006,
as described below. We want to make certain that there is
indeed a pool of people in the language teaching profession
who would be interested in attending such a course.

So I am writing to you to ask whether you think there would
be potential participants from Israel. I would also of course be
very grateful for any comments or suggestions on this proposal,
particularly on the timing and on any requirements it would
have to meet to be valid for people from your area.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Vivian Cook
Professor of Applied Linguistics, School of Education, Communication
and Language Sciences, University of Newcastle upon Tyne

ANNUAL NEWCASTLE SUMMER INSTITUTE IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS AND SLA SUMMIT

A two-week summer course in applied linguistics for practising
teachers including a mid-course day of second language acquisition
experts giving state-of-the-art talks, probably taking place in July.

Aims
A. to provide a professional summer school for those interested
in up-dating their knowledge of applied linguistics

B. to cover the main elements and trends in applied linguistics,
concentrating on second language acquisition and modern teaching
trends, including

* second language acquisition research: syntax, vocabulary,
phonology, discourse
* the EFL classroom today: goals, materials, methods
* current classroom teaching techniques for EFL: task-based
learning and post-communicative methods
* applying second language acquisition research to the classroom

Participants
Members of the language teaching profession in diverse countries,
in particular EFL/ESL teachers, teacher-trainers and those entering
MA courses in applied linguistics in the UK in the autumn.

Numbers
In the first year 20 participants with accommodation, social
andcultural activities, food, etc provided.

Time
10 teaching days over a fortnight in July

Second Language Acquisition Summit
This one-day event will occur in the middle of the Institute and
is open to day-participants as well, attracting students and
researchers of second language acquisition and language
teachers from all over the UK.
Three well-known experts in second language acquisition will
give accounts of their current work for an hour and a half each,
followed by a panel session and a social event to meet the speakers.

Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle is a bustling dynamic city in the north of England, with
such attractions as the new Sage concert halls and Hadrian's Wall.
It has an international airport and rapid train connections to
Edinburgh, London and the Midlands.

The University of Newcastle upon Tyne
The university is a large city campus style university with
internationally known research. The School of Education,
Communication and Language Sciences runs courses in many
areas including speech therapy and MAs in Applied Linguistics
and TESOL. It now has a strong staff in second language acquisition
including world experts such as Professors Li Wei, Manfred Pienemann
and Vivian Cook, one or more of whom would take part in the course.
