Subject: Fwd: More on projects
From: "cindy komet" <cindy@xxxxxxxxxxx>
I've just completed a round of projects in the 10th grade.
It's exhilarating to recall the range of emotions I experienced during that
four week period. I began the project process feeling completely confident and
knowing that I had worked out all of the 'bugs' from the previous years, only
to be bombarded by 35 panicked 10th graders who were sure they would never be
able to do research- in English. Then,
after successfully calming them down and building their self-confidence, they
over-confidently dove into complacency and thought that they had
all-the-time-in-the-world to create their masterpiece. The clock ticked, the
deadline arrived, pleading cries of 'one-more-week' could be heard in the
hallways and I lugged 75 kg of paperwork home with me to check on my
'free-day'.
I require my pupils to write a reflection of their work which includes their
difficulties, triumphs, feelings and what they've
learned about themselves, their topic and their fellow group members. I felt
that I must share the following with the list. (I haven't corrected the
grammar, but have excluded the names of the boarding schools and pupils.)
I am new in this school and I'm single from (NH boarding school) in this group.
When Cindy said us that we have to do our project in groups, H came to me and
asked me, if I want to do with her. I was very glad and agreed. We didn't
meet each other before. It was very nice to do the work with her. In the
beginning we talked only about pyramids, but in the
continuation we started to talk about other things like our friends, our
boarding schools, what did we do in the weekend...I came to the lesson with
smile on my face and the time passed by so fast. Sometimes we didn't agree
with each other, but always compromised and didn't argue. I had a good time and
I hope we will continue to be together in the English
lesson. H is a very nice and serious girl.
All I can say is, if working on projects has succeeded in forming a friendship
and bringing a smile on a teen's face, then they are certainly worth all of the
effort!
Cindy
