Subject: Module A
From: "byk" <byk@xxxxxxxxxxxx>
Dear Colleages,
I have been meaning to put up this question for some time.
As some of you know, among the many other things that I do, I also teach boys
in jail. The project is under the auspices of Hevrat HaMatnasim - the Hila
Project, which also teaches High School drop- outs.
The question I would like to put to you is the following. In projects like
this, the aim is not really to teach English, but to get the kids through
Bagrut, and the claim is that module A can be passed in a purely technical
manner, with hardly any knowledge of English at all. Do you think this is
possible? The aim is just for the students to pass, not to get high grades.
It is probably needless to say that I'm not in love with this approach, but
then, neither am I in love with module A, which I think is the worst of all the
modules of the New Bagrut. Since I know that I can start with non-readers in
the 10th grade, and reach level C by 12th grade, where the students know good
basic English, as well as passing the Bagrut, and that one can teach good basic
English in less time than that, and certainly reach Module A level, I don't
like this focus of the technical abilities needed to pass this level. I also
feel that the way that Module A is constructed leads to a technical approach.
I would be very interested to hear your views on the subject.
Shabbat Shalom
