Jane -
I wouldn't "ban" any book. (I have ben reading the Harry Potter series and
think they are really good. And a lot of my pupils have read them - in
English).
We do the book reports in class, they have to bring the book with them, and
we always include a question about the text. For example:
Mention two words or phrases you weren’t familiar with before you read the
book.
page ___ :_______________ page ___:_______________
Use them in meaningful sentences. (Don’t copy from the book!!) Translate
the sentences.
or
What is your favorite sentence in the book?
Why do you like this sentence?
Translate it.
So they must have read the book.
Of course, there are other questions about conflict, a character and so on.
Also - a week after I tell them to start reading the book, they bring the
book to school, I look over it with them and make a list of who is reading
what.
This works in a good 5 point 10th grade, I'm not sure what would happen in a
weaker class.
