But I couldn't agree more with you.   I found the writer's attitude quite 
irritating and obnoxious. 

 I think a lot depends on the immigrant's immediate social environment (is he 
or she surrounded only by other immigrants from same language background) ; his 
or her desire and ability to integrate in the new host country's environment 
(some new immigrants never get to feel comfortable using the L2 language).   
For sure, the personality, the age and the length of time that the immigrant 
has lived in the host country must surely play a part too.  

It is certainly not just a simple case of "deciding" not to mix the two 
languages - there is much more complex psychology and sociology involved.

Just my musings on the subject.
