There are many types of English - English dictionaries. Each one is based on
the editor(s)'s view point. That is why there are always a different
collection of words, a different form of definition (and what determines a
different word as opposed to a different form of the same word.), as well as
things such as pictures, illustrations, and charts. There really is no
"better" dictionary. It is the one that best suits your needs. Personally, I
have several. They are all used.
However, for a school library, I would like to suggest the Collin's Cobuild
Dictionary for Advanced Learners. It is not a cheap dictionary, but it is one
of the best out on the market for English students. It was created to help ESL
learners in England, but I have found it extremely helpful for students from 7
-12 grades. The definitions are in understandable English, it is user
friendly, and it gives additional information, such as collocation, examples,
etc. that help the reader use the word correctly. The best feature for the
student is that it recognizes that when forms of the word are very different,
it is possible to find them as different entries. ( go -went).
I saw the dictionary when I was in ECB this summer. So it is available in
Israel.
