Classroom Drama for Every EFL Learner: Other Avenues of Learning.
Integrating drama creatively in the EFL classroom can be a challenge for
any teacher. Which student gets the lead role? Should the exceptional learner
be cast aside? Together we explore the different ways of including the entire
class when using drama in the EFL class.
Dr Ellen Schur, The Open University of Israel
Vocabulary Strategies for Learning Disabled Pupils
In this workshop we will discuss the basic issues involved in 'knowing a
word', and look at features of vocabulary items that make them difficult/easy
to learn. We will then examine a taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategies and
explore ways of adapting these strategies to the needs of LD pupils.
Dena Wolfson, The Institute for the Advancement of Social Integration,
Bar-Ilan University.
No Student Is Left Behind! Differentiated Instruction Makes it Happen
Large classes, limited time periods and curricular mandates make it
challenging for teachers to adjust to the needs of today's diverse learners. In
order to survive in loaded-mixed-ability-classes, some teachers teach the
average and above average students, hoping that eventually all the students
will get something out of it. In an era of standards and accountability this is
not acceptable. Using differentiated instruction is the ultimate way to
maximize the potential of each student in heterogeneous classes. In the
lecture, we will present a model of differentiated instruction which is being
implemented in both elementary and junior high schools. We will show how
teachers using this model adjust learning materials to students of different
levels of achievement.
Dr. Barbara Kolan, Achva College of Education, Bar Ilan University
Raising Intercultural Awareness In Native Speakers Through Literature
This workshop is for teachers interested in raising intercultural
awareness in the English classroom. It specifically deals with teaching
literature to Native Speakers but the principles and the activities can be
widely applied. We will examine materials suitable for pupils with good
proficiency in English and explore multimedia possibilities for promoting
sensitivity to the nuances of language. We will try out a diversity of non-test
activities that can easily be adapted for your pupils' needs and interests.
