[etni] Compositions

I'd like to share a major breakthrough with you.

We all know how much "yunching" goes on every time we ask a class to write a
composition. Getting students to write 120 words in Grade 11 (5 pt) is met with
all sorts of eye rolling, turned down mouths, glares, etc.
Therefore, this year when I made my pitch for public speaking, the need to know
how to write and present a good speech, I was as usual in for the double
whammy. I had once again asked Grade 12 to both write and present a speech.
Know thy audience, etc.

After the usual reaction, this group really took up the challenge and actually
began to realize that many of our fearless leaders do not know how to write a
speech which suits their audience. Their comments included a lot of creative
criticism. They told me that they now listen differently to what people are
saying and try to figure out what message they were trying to get across.

However, what really took me by surprise was when they had to write a speech
and try to fit a well-developed concept into 120-130 words. They actually
complained that it was impossible to accomplish. "Out of the mouths of babes"

Maybe the "powers that be", (who have decided that writing is worthy of a
greater percentage in the matric exams), should think of going back to the Old,
Old Bagrut - one composition, more words - unlike the Old Bagrut - two comps,
fewer words or the New Bagrut - is that New, New - including G. It's beginning
to sound like the history of the Shekel and we are all familiar with that sad
lament.

Thanks for letting me share.
