I don't understand why you were censored, and I still say that the previous
etni poll about staying until 4? was just as detached from reality as
Limor. There are many different educational streams in this country, and
lots of small schools and small communities. Transporting the kids to
school is a major expense, so reducing the number of schools does not
always save money.
When I went to school, in the '50's and '60's in New York, we had a 6 hour
school day (9am-3pm), and that included lunch. In high school we were
restricted to a maximum of five, sometimes 4, academic subjects: English,
Math, science, Social Studies and a foreign language. The sixth hour was
divided between sport, health and study hall. The Jewish schools had much
longer days, because they had the religious subjects.
The thing I would reform here would be to combine history, ezrachut,
geography into Social Studies and Literature, grammar and composition into
"Hebrew." The kids have too many subjects for too few hours each and no
perspective. English should start later and be 5 hours a week until the
12th grade. Also taught in homogeneous hakbatzot.
