Hi All,
I can certainly appreciate Judy Givati's frustration regarding the attitude
of some pupils (and parents!) regarding the school/yearly grade for the
Bagrut. I've also heard similar comments and complaints.
I try not to get pulled into that pit and explain that I teach English and
not Bagrut. I don't know any "subject" known as "Module X" or whatever. Most
of the kids accept this as they have chosen to study in our high school.
(and not an external high school) Yes, there are those who do not fulfill
requirements and then balk at the grade. I've no intention of budging and
bending the rules to accommodate them. This of course, does not mean, lack
of flexibility for kids with special needs. I know some of us are also up
against principals who complain about low grades when we hand them in prior
to the Bagrut. More than once, I've had to "defend myself" on this. Needless
to say, I make sure to write letters and inform parents of their kids'
situation where this is warranted and these letters are all on file for
reference.
Some of our pupils will end up shelling out huge sums later on life to make
up for what they could have done in high school. It's their prerogative.
I'll continue teaching English as I feel I should. What else can a teacher
do?
Laurie
And Happy Pesach to all celebrants!
