I was astounded to hear that a teacher does not have to give a tsiun shnati to
a student who did not attend 70% of classes (unless the moetsa pedogagi decides
otherwise). Are there schools that follow through on this? It would be a great
tool to get students to attend.
BTW - A student CANNOT take a bagrut exam (as an interni student) without a
school grade. Therefore, if a student is absent more than 70% of the time, and
does not get a school grade, he/she may not take that bagrut exam. Therefore,
the teacher you were discussing was within her rights.
Naturally, it would only be fair to let the students know about this policy at
the beginning of the year. The problem is that schools are judged by the
percentage of their students who complete the requirements for Bagrut
certificates upon graduation, so I highly doubt that many schools will actually
act according to the above policy. More likely, the teachers will be told to
give a school grade regardless of whether or not the student has attended
class. (And we all know that a very large number of students do NOT attend 70%
of our classes!!!!
I plan to bring all this to the attention of our Hanhalah.
