[etni] A grammar question-- UPDATE

Okay, this is amazing! Within three days of posting my condition I/ condition II question (I don't intend to lend him any more money. If I _____________(do) he _____________(waste) it again) I have received 26 replies!! Since many of you asked I am posting the results:
The answers were equally split between , it's definitely a condition I sentence it's definitely a condition II sentence both are acceptable.
Everybody gave very strong grammatical arguments. Since even a group of well educated teachers cannot come to an absolute decision I think we have to accept both answers in this case and toss out the question for the future ..
Of course, i would love to hear from our trusty national English co-ordinator.
In any case, thank you to everyone who answered and proved once again how helpful this site is! Fruma
