Not sure exactly what "marking" is.
If you mean some sort of "enduring" selection process that results in the items
staying selected regardless of anything that happens, then emelfm2 does not
support that.
If you simply mean selecting an item, a default key-binding <Ctrl><Shift>space
toggles selection of the foucsed item. You can of course change the binding to
whatever suits you best.

No. Years ago we played with that, and it tended to produce an unreadable mess.
And it's slow.
