can't you drag the slider in the middle of the file panes? this one
should be either on the very right or very left side of the window, if
you can see only one file pane.

hmm, there seems to be a problem with the cache, but i can't reproduce
it over here. take a look at the end of .emelfm2/cache. there should be
several ratio values like:

file-pane-ratio-last=0.549656
file-pane-ratio=0.549656
output-pane-ratio-last=0.697885
output-pane-ratio=0.697885

also, please start e2 from console with -d 5 and look if it says 

[DEBUG ] writing cache file

when you quit it.
