The comboxes just keep a history of paths actually entered there. Sort of
short-term bookmarks. Preserved between sessions.

The full history is more than that (opening dir via any process (keybinding, cd
command etc), records a 'position' so that forward and back can work with a bit
of intelligence, can have more items which are individually accessible via
menus associated with the respective buttons, and is not preserved.
