Well, that's the way gestures work. Modifier key-presses are ignored except in 
context with some other key- or button-processing.

Indeed. And more likely to be your choice if you have lots of buttons and/or 
are not a fan of gesturing.

I haven't got an ideal choice. Btns 1-3 are going to be most-available, but 1 
is bad (interferes with selection, DnD etc), 2 is bad-ish (often not present or 
present as a wheel), 3 is for context menus, 1+3 is reported as 2, 1+2 or 2+3 
has same problem as 2 alone. So probably default to btn 3 with modifier(s), 
say, <Ctrl>3, depending on how this works in practice.

BTW, there's another pre-release now, in which the order of checking for 
bindings is reversed. That is, in the respective bindings trees, checks are now 
done bottom-up. A lower-level (context-specific) binding will pre-empt any 
higher-level one that's the same.
