Not sure what you mean here:
"in the background" = non-blocking ? that's already the case for the copy/move
plugins
Remember that _all_ file operations can be made to operate in the background if
so desired - there's a "run in background" advanced config setting

IMHO not worth fully duplicating the copy/move plugins. If the plugin API were
more sophisticated (if it were possible to have multiple tasks for a single
plugin, or a plugin could borrow fuctions from other plugins), then it would be
more appropriate.
