The runaway refreshing is caused by lots of spurious signals, SIGIO and the
other one assigned to dnotify. Don't yet know what's issuing the signals. I've
no reason to expect any problem with any other fam mechanism (but then, nor did
I expect that from dnotify ...)

I've seen that, but never been able to reproduce it 'on demand'. Recently added
a check to confirm that the item being processed is really still there, but
don't know if it helps.
