Typing new directory for dirline

Hello;
I've seen that if I hit Ctrl-1 and start typing in a new directory, the
text appends to the existing text instead of clearing the selected
(entire) text.
I've usually seen that the selected text is cleared. FWIW Apple
guidelines require this.
