Permissions

Incorrect behavior?
I have some files on a cd, all permissions are read only. If I copy a
directory, it does not work. It creates the top directory read only,
then dies: Permission denied.
Command line: cp -R [directory] . works fine.
Also, although I am the owner, Change_permissions does not allow
changing the new directory to 755, 700 etc.
Command line: chmod 700 [directory] works fine.
Command line: chmod -R u+w [directory] works fine.
I know, burn your backups with permissions :-)
