Hey Tom its good to hear from you.Been so busy lately that I haven't had
time to post anything to the list until now.
Don't be so hard on yourself. They wheren't that bad. :)
Its all trial and error.I usually start with something so ugly that I
wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy and gradually build it up to
something that looks.....well...worth looking at. :)
... The only problem I see is that they
aren't using gtk2 colors but that can be changed.
I know that gnome encourages a particular pallette, but gtk ??
Yep.Like I said in an earlier email, the guy that made the gnome icons
also made the genric gtk2 series. He used the exact same pallete for
both.Actually,a lot of the icons are the same.Simply put,its just a
standard. The problem is that the (what I call) realistic look is a bit
of a pain to recreate whereas kde goes with a much simpler cartoonish
look.No offense meant at all.I like most of the default kde icons.
I've tried to work with combinations of moderately 'reserved' reds, blues
and greens.
Would you mind if I
start playing with them a bit?
Go for it. I particularly still dislike the misture of hard- and blurred-edges.
If you haven't been following the
discussion over at the emelfm2 mailing list there where a few links I
sent tooar about gnome icons standards.
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/layout.html
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/1.0/icons.html
The guy that wrote those also makes the stock gtk icons and sticks to
the standards which is what tooar wants.
That's doesn't sound like tooar, to me !! But that's for another discussion ...
The reason for this is so
Please don't misuderstand because I'm not trying to be a jerk. :)
The first "rename icon" I made for him looked a bit too gnomish.I asked
him to be honest and basically what he said was he wanted the new icons
to fit into the default gtk scheme as best as possible.A few odd out of
place icons and things can start to look a bit screwy.Just open up any
app using the fox library and you'll see what I mean.Fox uses old win95
icons which do not fit in to any modern linux desktop.Heck it won't even
fit in on winxp.Sure those icons where considered nice at one time but
that ancient history.
emelfm2 will blend in better.Personally I don't really like the
gnome/gtk look.The green arrows suck imo. :)
I was actually thinking of creating an icons set to my liking.Take a
look at the attachment.
A bit too bright, for my taste.
If you scale it down it wouldn't be too bright at all. :) I just kind
of like the gel look over aqua or flat boring icons but each to his or
her own right?
Whatever you end up with, I recommend you try to provide a 'theme' across
groups 'copy/move/link' and 'copyas/moveas/linkas'
Oh yeah! A theme is the only way to go.If I ever get around to it the
theme in question would be a gtk theme and not just for emelfm2.
I'll download your latest set of icons and have a look at the changes
you've made.
