I have been thinking for some time already that the default
applications bindings could be improved. I will list several
applications that I use and find ergonomic, but that are (mostly)
lightweight and would generally fit the scope of emel. Additionally, I
will suggest more extensions to be included by default.
Office documents:
extensions: add .rtf
commands: add abiword
Add PowerPoint documents:
extensions: add .ppt
commands: add openoffice
HTML documents:
extensions: add .mht (MHTML format, supported by IE, Opera, and unMHT
Firefox extension)
commands: add midori (the recently added Xfce4 Web browser [1]); also
add bluefish, geany and seamonkey --edit (it would be reasonable to
have default bindings for editing HTML files)

PDF documents:
commands: add epdfview [1], evince and pdfedit [2] (epdfview is a
lightweight alternative to evince, out of maintenance but generally
usable, and pdfedit is QT3, but lightweight and invaluable for
graphically editing PDF files; for a default I would vote for evince
as the most usable)

PS documents:
commands: add evince
Text documents:
commands: add mousepad, perhaps geany
Spreadsheet documents:
extenstions: add .gnumeric
commands: add gnumeric
Audio files:
commands: mplayer, gnome-mplayer [1], whaawmp [2], xfmedia (personally
I've settled for an MPD client, either Xfmpc, Sonata or ncmpc, but for
the goals of emel those listed are probably the better. xfmedia is
Xfce's media player---throughout this post I assume Xfce applications
are deemed desktop independent and ligthweight---, mplayer is often
handy to play single files and gnome-mplayer is a recently developed
mplayer GUI, which is only soft-dependent on Gnome; unlike what the
name suggests, it can be built without any Gnome dependencies. whaawmp
is a lightweight Gstreamer-based alternative to Totem)

Image files:
commands: add ristretto [1], mirage [2], perhaps remove gview (I would
suggest defaulting to one of these fast and lightweight applications)

[2] http://mirageiv.berlios.de
Video files:
extensions: add mkv
commands: remove totem, add gnome-mplayer, whaawmp, xfmedia, vlc (the
latter is QT4, but widely used and non-dependent on KDE)
All tarball types:
commands: Xarchiver [1] and Squeeze [2] (both are lightweight archive
managers affilitated with Xfce; Xarchiver has no Xfce dependency,
while Squeeze has; I also think it would be better to default to a
graphical archive manager, or to "file.unpack" than to "unpack in
current directory")

[2] http://squeeze.xfce.org
Source code files:
commands: add geany, bluefish
Add LyX filetype:
extensions: add lyx
commands: add LyX [1] (this is a personal preference; I feel LyX,
hence LaTeX output is largely superiour in quality to output of
conventional wordprocessors; recent versions are QT4 only, but 1.4.x
has a GTK+ frontend; it has no KDE dependencies)

Well, my rant on applications.. Many are personal preferences, but
some would probably well fit emel. Please let me know what you think.
Regards,
Liviu
