Default applications for filetypes (WAS Re: emelfm2 can't sort files bigger than 4GB)

IIRC the intent was to not include default applications that depend on any
specific DE e.g. gnome or kde. But I notice that muine and totem do not comply
with this.
evince and conky ? Maybe change the policy ?
mplayer is already included for video files.
More generally, what do you all favour for sound and pictures and movies, these
days ?
And maybe we could work with www.gnomefiles.org popularity data ?
