I met up with the Carolina Field Birders this morning for their annual visit to our neck of the woods. We started off at some riverside parks (both Orioles, most of the swallows), then went out to the Gamelands. All those extra eyes and ears made for a good list of birds found. A full list of birds seen will come later, but highlights included
- good scope views (unfortunately not for everybody) of a Grasshopper sparrow. This was just outside the gamelands in a "yet to be mowed" hay field . Other similar fields had several E meadowlarks.
- a couple of singing Blue winged warblers close to the area in the Bear creek access where there were several in 2010.
- a Yellow throated vireo in full voice, but hiding well.
- some good views of A kestrels. I gather that with all the carefully placed nest boxes out at the Gamelands, the Kestrels have reared a number of young this year.
