[elky] Re: instrument cluster/clock power ? (Never mind...I'm an idiot)

Ray....How do you know it's the clock that's draining your battery ???

You might want to put an ampmeter between the +battery post and the +battery
terminal and pull some fuses to double check....

Betcha can't wait to get thay left hand needle wrapped aroung the peg on the
other side !!!!

You gonna run a GPS too ??? I've got one if you don't.....There's nothing like
seeing that Mspeed reading at the end of a run !!!!

By removing the 2 1/4" hex head screws, I was able to pull the tach and find
that yes, the red wire led to a standoff on the cluster molding and also to the
clock motor. I pulled it off, wrapped it up and replaced the tach in the
cluster. All is well. No Check Engine light, other gauges function (as far as
I could see..at least the volts, O/P and tach, cuz I could crank the motor) and
I'll put it back together in a little bit. For the moment, I'm gonna take a
break and edit car show photos.

Here's the guts of the Monte Carlo's instrument cluster:

See the red and black wires on the lower right? Are they the clock power and
ground? I need to disable the clock cuz it drains the battery. Yeah, I have a
battery tender on it now, but I don't want it to drain while on the salt. I
know...it shouldn't completely drain an Optima battery in a week, but still....

Yanno, I didn't even check to see if there's a separate fuse for the clock.
But I had to pull the face off the cluster to remove the Check Engine light.

Anyway, it's progress. Now back to wiring the ignition box.
