That's a common problem with the old large cap HEI. Have seen those carbon buttons and the rotor go bad allot. I'm real happy since I ditched the big cap and went to the small cap HEI. Most carb problems are ignition issues and most trans problems are engine issues. Robert Adams Every once in a while I make an effort to diagnose the sputter / missing in the '80 (406, Megasquirt, etc). I was able to test the fuel pressure: it was 38 psi, I raised it to 44, then to 51. The miss seemed to move higher in the rpm range, but is still there. Then I remembered that many fuel problems are actually ignition problems... but my ignition is pretty simple: MSD Pro Billet distributor, Holley ignition box (similar to MSD 6AL), matching Holley coil. The ignition boxes usually work or they don't, from what I've read. So I pulled the cap on the distributor and noticed some wear on the terminals, but the glaring problem: no carbon button, like it's broken off flush. I also noticed the metal tab on the rotor didn't appear to be bent high enough to make contact with the carbon button when it was there, so maybe it wore away from arcing. I'll order another cap & rotor and see what happens, I'd really like to be able to rev over 3000 rpm...
