did a little more digging (great info Ray, btw. book learning is one thing, someone who knows the beast is a whole lot better)
the model code is the 2nd number of the VIN = for a Classic it should be a "D".
"C" is the base model. 6th number should be a '4' for the model year.In 74 the engine code for the 400s is located on the front, right side of the block.
the 400 2 bbl is CSU, CSX or CTA the 400 4 bbl is CTC In the VIN it's the 5th symbol -(Think I have a misprint here, Manual says 2 bbl is the same as the 4bbl ) so my guess is
R= 2 bbl U = 4 bbl (which agrees with book No. 2) The 2 bbl 400 is 150 HP the 4 bbl 400 is 180 hp.all this is assuming the engine is the original, but at least you can determine that from the VIN and engine number.
And I agree with Robert - the engine is the value in a '74. Rules: Please play nicely with others. -List members page (text & pic links): http://www.myelcamino.net/eclist.htm -List members page (all pics): http://www.myelcamino.net/ec_list.htm
