DESCRIPTION

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) at the University of California,
Berkeley, is seeking a fulltime Postdoctoral Fellow to work with faculty in
the Quantitative Methods and Evaluation (QME) Program. The fellowships are
funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department
of Education with an annual stipend of the fellowship is $52,500. The
expected duration of the fellowships is 15 months, with a start date as
early as February 1, 2016.

Fellows will advance their methodological expertise and conduct research in
critical areas of educational practice. They can participate in a range of
existing projects associated with the QME Program and the Berkeley
Evaluation and Assessment Research (BEAR) Center, and they may also
initiate their own research. Mark Wilson has several grants to develop and
evaluate assessment systems, including (a) assessments at the
early-childhood level, across cognitive, socio-emotional, artistic and
physical ability constructs, (b) reasoning skills among middle school
science students, (c) writing ability among Community College students, and
(d) mathematics ability at the end-of-school level. Sophia Rabe-Hesketh’s
research interests include treatment of missing data and latent
variable/multilevel modeling, and she has a grant, joint with Andrew
Gelman, to solve Bayesian estimation problems in education research using
the Stan software. Zach Pardos’ lab focuses on computational approaches to
human learning research with grants in (a) exploring deep neural network
architectures for discovery and prediction in higher-ed big data, (b)
real-time learning analytics and intelligent student grouping in next
generation courseware, and (c) recommendation in digital learning
environments. The research conducted by the postdoctoral fellow can either
have a relatively stronger substantive focus or be more methodological in
nature, depending on the fellow’s interests and background. The
postdoctoral fellow will be able to take courses on measurement,
evaluation, statistics, and computation within the GSE and across the
campus. During the fellowship period, we will invite experts in research
methodology to hold workshops and interact directly with the postdoctoral
fellow.

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must be U.S. citizens or
permanent residents. They must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in
Education or a related area with a strong background in quantitative
methods, or a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in a quantitative discipline,
such as statistics or computing, with a strong interest in education. The
completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation are required
at time of application.

The department seeks candidates whose research or teaching has prepared
them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher
education. UC Berkeley has an excellent benefits package including: family
health insurance, a generous allowance for travel, course attendance,
research support and a number of policies and programs to support employees
as they balance work and family.

To apply, please go to the following link:
https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF00947. Applicants should submit a
statement of interest, not exceeding 3 pages, their CV, and contact
information for 3 references. This position will remain open until filled.
Please direct questions to Elizabeth Geer by email at emgeer@xxxxxxxxxxxx.
