Postdoctoral Research Scholar Position—Department of Psychology, North
Carolina State University



North Carolina State University invites applications for a three-year
Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in the Psychology Department.
The postdoctoral fellow will work on an NSF-funded project, which
focuses on the design, development, and testing of an intelligent,
adaptive multi-agent tutoring system for the biological and medical
sciences. The aim is to advance the current MetaTutor system to
detect, track, model, and foster learners’ cognitive, metacognitive,
and affective processes. The project involves an interdisciplinary
team from the fields of psychology, computer science, and biomedical
sciences.  The candidate will be involved in modifying the system’s
architecture, building a robust student model, integrating various
sensing technologies to capture the deployment of self-regulatory
processes during learning, use data mining and other techniques to
explore data generated from multi-channel process data (e.g.,
eye-trackers, log-files, agent-learner dialogue, and physiological
data of affective states. The candidate will work with Dr. Azevedo to
coordinate grant milestones, team meetings and contribute to annual
grant reports, lead and contribute to scholarly writing, and conduct
research with members of the interdisciplinary team. The candidate
must have excellent interpersonal, writing and research skills, strong
time management and organizational skills, the ability to prioritize
and meet deadlines and work both independently and as a member of the
research team. The candidate will work with Dr. Azevedo and members of
his interdisciplinary team at NCSU, including Dr. Lester’s team in the
Department of Computer Science.



Qualifications. A Ph.D. degree in computer science or a related field
is required. The candidate should have exceptional C#, Java, and/or
C++ programming expertise and should have working knowledge of
database systems and agent technology. The candidate should have a
clear understanding of best practices for software design,
development, and maintenance with demonstrated creativity in solving
complex problems. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal,
writing and research skills, strong time management and organizational
skills, the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and work both
independently and as a member of a team. The candidate should have
prior experience and future goals of publishing research. Prior
experience in design and development of intelligent tutoring systems,
pedagogical agents, and/or advanced learning technologies is strongly
preferred. Prior experience using game engines such as Unity and
Unreal Engine with a strong understanding of 2D and 3D graphics is a
plus.

Target start date: Sometime shortly after November 1, 2014. Exact
start date is negotiable.

Salary: $60K annual
