I have also thought about this and looked at Nextdoor's terms and done a small amount of research. Some comments appear to be from people in the US with extreme views on individual privacy. In my view this is an illogical position because if you want to be in a community and know your neighbours and help one another you have to give up something - and perhaps quite a lot - of your privacy.

I have decided, on balance, to join. Yes you do need to identify who you are, but then most people in the area already know who I am.

The 'local area' for Nextdoor, where your details will be shared, is called 'Botanical' and is very small - it does not include Endcliffe Glen Road, but does include all the streets on the left of Ecclesall Road down to Broomgrove Road - what we know as 'Botanical', 'Botanical Gate' and 'The Groves', plus the roads to the north of Clarkehouse Road from Oakholme Road to Newbould Lane. Nextdoor says "Information about you is never displayed outside your neighbourhood unless you post a message or reply to a nearby neighbour."

I have asked to see posts from all the 'nearby' neighbourhoods around 'Botanical', basically along Ecclesall Road and Broomhill.

However, will keep checking the integrity of these people. They are in it for the money, but then there is no such thing as a free lunch so I am happy to give up something if the returns are worth it.

Good evening all

Whilst not particularly a NHW matter the buyout of Streetlife by an American firm Nextdoor does effect your personal details and addresses if you have signed up for Streetlife. The change takes place in the next ten days and most Streetlife users will have received an email suggesting you sign up to Nextdoor by clicking the link

If you click the link to transfer your account with Streetlife to Nextdoor your full name and address will be on view to all your neighbours and the area covered by Streetlife. At present Streetlife members use pseudonyms or nicknames when they post any notice or message and there is no reference to their address unless specifically mentioned in the post or via private messages.

My concern is that we did not sign up for these open records and their is no protection from other companies accessing the data and using it for commercial cold calling let alone the criminal element who also have access to the system.

The choice is your but I for one will not be joining the service.

regards

Les
